The Collage

I finally got my act together and assembled the collage for the story I'm doing for Fast Draft!  Here's the picture:

I'm sure the text is too small to read, so the top one is a quote from the beginning of The Hobbit.  It says:

This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.  He may have lost the neighbors' respect, but he gained-- well, you will see whether he gained anything in the end.

The other one says:

"Nothing Happens without risk."  Anne Packard

It's on a magnetic board, and the round things are all magnets I made for the collage.  Some are just pictures, but most of them say something, like "Keep Calm and Rock On" or "Keep Calm and Do It Anyway".  A couple are Big Bag quotes, including "I'm clearly too evolved for driving" and "I am not crazy, my mother had me tested".

The pictures all represent a character or group of characters or some aspect of the story.  The big 3 is to remind me that in stories, things often happen in threes.  So if I'm stuck, look for something that needs to repeat.

I guess that's it.  If you have any questions about any of the images, or can't tell what they are (the overall picture may be a little small if you don't already know what you're looking at), just ask.

I've already procrastinated the day away, so I'm going to go poke at a blank page and see if I can't at least rack up a few words before bed.

  1. I like the collage. I think I tend not to be a visual thinker so while I like looking at other people's collages and art work and thinking about them, it isn't a way that would come naturally to me for expression. So, questions: what's up with Gandalf? How does he fit into the story? And is that a bus in the middle? And are the magnets bottle caps?

  2. The story is loosely based on The Hobbit. The Gandalf character is played by "the twins"-- the two floppy haired, eyeliner wearing guys pinned right below him. I can't wait to really dive into those two. I've been doing a little bit of research about the trickster archetype, and it's fascinating stuff!

The picture in the middle is actually a truck of some kind, but for my purposes it's a painted school bus. The guys are going on a road trip, and I needed something that could carry at least 7 dudes and all the band's equipment. And also something that would be a little off-beam. Voila! Converted school bus!

And yes, the magnets are all bottle caps. I became obsessed with the idea of collaging this way during Lucy's Discovery class last fall, and I've probably made a couple hundred of the suckers since then. They're addictive!

  3. And one more, you ARE going to tell me when I can get this to read, right? RIGHT? or do I have to beg!

  4. Well, I have to write it first.... But I will definitely let you all know when it's available! You'll probably hear the whooping when I get "the call"! :D

  5. I am VERY excited about this!

(Except, I never read The Hobbit and did not see any of the movies, so that part might be slightly lost on me.)

  6. Basically, it's about a mild mannered homebody type who gets swept up on an adventure and defeats a dragon. I'm interpreting that as a roadtrip, and the dragon at the end is the ex he has to stand up to to get his stuff and his self respect back. And of course, he ends up with a hot rocker boyfriend. My plan is to use the original story for inspiration, but still have a fun, sexy adventure that people who are unfamiliar with The Hobbit will enjoy.

  7. This is great. Love the collage and the accompanying story.

I have my collage pinned above the spinner bike so that I can pedal and make things up at the same time. : )

  8. My eye went straight to Gandalf, too. I had "one of these things is not like the other" playing in my head. ;) I'm no good a collages. I do like some visual inspiration, but it's usually very specific. This whole move-them-around-until-they-click thing doesn't work for me. I wish it did, because everyone can use new tools. Anyway, it sounds like a great story. Have fun writing it. (That's why we write, right?)
